Product Certification Guide: CE, FDA, FCC & More for China Imports
By MING Sourcing Team • Updated 2026
Importing products from China without proper certifications can result in customs seizure, marketplace suspension, or even legal liability. This guide covers the major certifications by market and product type, so you know exactly what's required before your first shipment.
US Market Certifications
FCC (Federal Communications Commission)
Required for: Any electronic device that emits radio frequency energy — WiFi, Bluetooth, cellular, or even unintentional emissions from digital circuits.
- FCC Part 15 Subpart B: Unintentional radiators (most electronics)
- FCC Part 15 Subpart C: Intentional radiators (WiFi, Bluetooth devices)
- Cost: $3,000-$10,000 | Timeline: 2-6 weeks
FDA (Food and Drug Administration)
Required for: Food contact materials, medical devices, cosmetics, supplements, and some electronic devices that make health claims.
- FDA facility registration (manufacturer and importer)
- Prior Notice for food products before each shipment
- 510(k) clearance for medical devices
- Cost: $500-$50,000+ depending on classification
UL (Underwriters Laboratories)
Required for: Electrical products. Not legally mandatory in most cases, but major retailers (Amazon, Walmart, Target) require UL listing.
- UL 60950-1 / UL 62368-1: IT and AV equipment safety
- UL 2054: Household and commercial batteries
- Cost: $5,000-$20,000 | Timeline: 6-12 weeks
EU Market Certifications
CE Marking
CE is not a single certification — it's a declaration that your product complies with applicable EU directives:
- LVD (Low Voltage Directive): Electrical safety for products operating at 50-1000V AC or 75-1500V DC
- EMC Directive: Electromagnetic compatibility — your product doesn't interfere with other devices
- RED (Radio Equipment Directive): For wireless devices (WiFi, BT, cellular)
- RoHS: Restriction of hazardous substances (lead, mercury, cadmium)
- REACH: Registration of chemical substances
- Total cost: $3,000-$15,000 | Timeline: 3-8 weeks
How MING Manages Certifications
- Pre-production planning: We identify all required certifications before you invest in tooling or production.
- Lab coordination: We work with accredited labs in Shenzhen (SGS, TUV, Intertek) for faster turnaround and lower costs than US/EU labs.
- Documentation management: We ensure all test reports, DoC (Declaration of Conformity), and certificates are properly prepared for customs clearance.
- Ongoing compliance: If regulations change or you modify your product, we coordinate re-testing as needed.
