China Sourcing Cost Breakdown: The True Cost of Importing from China

By MING Sourcing Team • Updated 2026

The biggest mistake new importers make is looking only at the unit price from the factory. The true "landed cost" — the total cost of getting a product from a Chinese factory to your warehouse — includes many additional costs that can add 30-60% on top of the factory price.

Landed Cost Example: Consumer Electronics Product

Let's walk through a real-world example — a USB desk fan with custom branding, 2,000 units:

ItemCost
Factory unit price (FOB Shenzhen)$8.50 x 2,000 = $17,000
Custom mold (logo branding)$1,500
Pre-shipment inspection$350
Sea freight (LCL, 2 CBM)$300
Insurance$85
US customs duty (3.9% on fans)$680
Customs broker$200
FCC testing (one-time)$3,000
Total Landed Cost$23,115
Landed Cost Per Unit$11.56 (vs. $8.50 factory price = 36% markup)

How to Reduce Sourcing Costs

  1. Negotiate FOB, not unit price. FOB includes the factory's local logistics to the port — ask for FOB pricing to compare suppliers on equal terms.
  2. Order in full container loads (FCL). LCL (less than container) shipping is 2-3x more expensive per CBM than FCL. If your order is close to filling a 20ft container (28 CBM), add a few more units to hit FCL.
  3. Consolidate shipments. If you source multiple products from China, ship them together to share container costs.
  4. Get HS codes right. Incorrect tariff classification can result in overpaying duties. Consult your customs broker before shipping.
  5. Use a sourcing agent. Agents negotiate better pricing, catch quality issues before they ship, and handle logistics — typically paying for themselves through cost savings.
