China Sourcing for UK Importers
Post-Brexit, the UK has its own product compliance framework (UKCA marking) separate from the EU's CE marking. While many requirements overlap, UK importers need to understand the differences. The UK imports approximately £50 billion from China annually, making it one of China's largest European trade partners.

Key Challenges for UK Buyers Buyers
UKCA vs CE Marking
The UK now requires UKCA marking for most products. CE marking is still accepted for some categories during the transition period, but UKCA is the long-term requirement.
Post-Brexit Customs
UK customs procedures have changed since Brexit. Importers need an EORI number starting with GB and must make customs declarations.
UK Product Safety
The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) enforces UK product safety requirements. An Authorised Representative in the UK may be required.
Duty & VAT
UK customs duties based on UK Global Tariff (UKGT). 20% VAT applied on import. Postponed VAT accounting is available for VAT-registered businesses.

UKCA Marking: What You Need to Know
UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking is the UK's replacement for CE marking. The technical requirements are largely the same as CE, but the administrative process is different:
- Testing must be done by a UK-approved body (for products requiring third-party assessment).
- Technical documentation must reference UK-designated standards (which are mostly identical to EU harmonised standards).
- A UK-based responsible person must be identified on the product or packaging.
- The UKCA mark itself has a different design from the CE mark.
Post-Brexit Import Process
- Get a GB EORI number: Register at gov.uk — required for all UK imports.
- Classify your goods: Use the UK Trade Tariff tool to find HS codes and duty rates.
- Arrange customs declarations: Use a customs broker or make declarations through the Customs Declaration Service (CDS).
- Pay duties and VAT: Duties based on UKGT rates. VAT can be postponed for VAT-registered businesses.
- Ensure compliance: UKCA marking, safety testing, and proper labeling before goods arrive.
Shipping to the UK
Major UK ports include Felixstowe (largest container port), Southampton, and London Gateway. Sea freight from Shenzhen takes 30–40 days. Many Chinese factories now have experience with UKCA requirements and can prepare compliant products.
