PCB Assembly in China: Guide to Electronics Manufacturing
TL;DR: Shenzhen is the world capital of PCB assembly. A 4-layer PCB costs $0.50–$2 per board (batch of 1,000+). Full PCBA (bare board + components + assembly) typically costs $5–$50 per board depending on complexity. Turnaround: prototype in 5–7 days, production in 2–4 weeks.
Why Shenzhen for PCBA?
Shenzhen's Huaqiangbei electronics market and surrounding manufacturing ecosystem make it uniquely suited for electronics production:
- Component availability: 90%+ of electronic components are available within 24 hours in Shenzhen.
- Cost: PCBA costs in Shenzhen are 30–60% lower than US/EU, even accounting for shipping.
- Speed: Prototype PCBs in 24–48 hours. PCBA prototypes in 5–7 days.
- Scale: From 10-piece prototypes to millions of units per month — Shenzhen handles it all.
PCB Fabrication Costs
| Board Type | Unit Cost (1,000 pcs) | Prototype (5 pcs) | Lead Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-layer, standard | $0.30 – $1.00 | $5 – $15 | 3–5 days |
| 4-layer | $0.80 – $2.50 | $15 – $30 | 5–7 days |
| 6-layer | $2.00 – $5.00 | $30 – $60 | 7–10 days |
| Flex/rigid-flex | $3.00 – $15.00 | $50 – $150 | 10–15 days |
PCBA Process
- Bare PCB fabrication: Your Gerber files are used to etch and drill the circuit board.
- Component sourcing: Factory procures components from your BOM (Bill of Materials). Critical step — verify component authenticity.
- Solder paste application: Stencil printing of solder paste on SMD pads.
- SMT placement: Pick-and-place machines mount surface-mount components at high speed.
- Reflow soldering: Board passes through reflow oven to permanently solder SMD components.
- Through-hole insertion: Manual or automated insertion of through-hole components (if any).
- Wave/selective soldering: Solder through-hole components.
- Inspection & testing: AOI (Automated Optical Inspection), ICT (In-Circuit Test), and/or functional testing.
Component Sourcing Risks
The biggest risk in Chinese PCBA is counterfeit components. Protect yourself:
- Specify authorized distributors: Require components from Digi-Key, Mouser, Arrow, or LCSC rather than the open market.
- Request traceability: Ask for purchase receipts and lot/date codes for critical components.
- X-ray inspection: For high-value ICs, X-ray inspection can detect remarked or refurbished chips.
- Lock the BOM: Don't let the factory substitute components without your written approval.
